Empathy is at the core of our work.

We do research a little differently at obvi.

Inspired design.

It doesn’t matter if we are designing a product, a service, or even a new brand–the best designs are useful, valuable, and serve a real human need. In order to design in this way, we have to understand what’s happening with people—people like you. Your stories inspire new understanding, new ideas, and new pathways.

Goodbye focus groups.

We don’t believe in two-way mirrors or strange meeting rooms. We love the messiness of real life, which is why we may ask to meet somewhere that's personal to you, like your home, workplace or school. If we are hosting, we promise the place will be comfortable and inviting.

Unscripted.

Participating in our research might be a conversation, a series of texts, playing a game, or making a collage together. Our main objective: we want to understand who you are, and what makes you "you". We may show you a concept or early design, but we’re just as likely to ask you a variety of open-ended questions. We promise, there are no wrong answers.

Privacy rules.

Maintaining confidentiality is very important to us. We will ask if we want to take photos or record you on camera. We won't share anything you say or do publicly unless you say we can. And if we share something top secret, we expect you to keep that quiet too.

Finding insights.

After we finish our research, we review all of the stories we heard. We identify themes and important discoveries, which we call “insights”. We might even make a visual map, or in design lingo, a user journey. These are used in two ways: to share with our client partners and to inspire our designs.
